HISTORY OF THE NATURE RESERVE

The problem of conservation and restoration of the Crimean Riviera forests was first discussed after the annexation of Crimea to the Russian Empire.
1797
1797
Nikitskaya Dacha was founded.
1843
1843
First forest inventories (renewed in 1864 and 1881). By the end of the nineteenth century some parts of the Crimean Riviera forests were used for Royal and Imperial Hunting.
1888
1888
A new Forest Law came to force.

Clearcutting and grazing were prohibited in unique protective forests of the Crimean Riviera that needed conservation "for state and social benefit".
1917
1917
Russian Provisional Government nationalized areas that had been used for Royal and Imperial Hunting and founded Crimean State Nature Reserve. It did not operate during the Russian Civil War.
1923
1923
The north-east part of the former Nikitskaya Dacha became a part of Crimean State Nature Reserve.
1931
1931
Other mountain parts of the former Nikitskaya Dacha became a part of the Yalta Forest Agency.
1939
1939
The forestry agency started working under the Chief Directorate for Holiday Resorts and got reorganized into a municipal forest.
1944
1944
The municipal forest started operating under the Chief Directorate for Forest Service and reorganized back to Yalta Forestry Agency.
1973
1973
Yalta Mountain-Forest State Reserve was established on the basis of the Yalta Forestry Agency.

Back then the nature reserve’s area was 141 square kilometers (145 square kilometers now).
1992
1992
The nature reserve’s name was changed into Yalta Mountain-Forest State Nature Reserve.
2018
2018
Joint Directorate "Crimean Protected Areas" was established for protection of the Crimean nature reserves and refuges.
