HYDROLOGY
Little precipitation, a long dry summer, soluble rocks and a variety of landforms cause lack of surface water and its uneven distribution over the nature reserve.

The slopes of the coastal part of the nature reserve are formed by impermeable argillaceous slates and that is why almost all rainfall becomes surface water.
The main drainage basin is the Main Range of the Crimean Mountains that is formed by fractured and cavernous Jurassic limestones.

Rivers
Almost all Crimean rivers start in the mountainous part of the peninsula.
  • the river system is the most complex at 600−1000 meters above sea level where there are most of the springs that start streams and rivers;
  • the density of the river system in the mountains is 0,70−1,0 km/km2.
All rivers of the nature reserve are mountainous because of their small basins, lengths and water deficiency. These rivers are short, have high stream gradients, speed and floods with relatively small amounts of water.

Drainage system

It is represented by many underground springs and small mountain rivers:

  • Khostabash,
  • Zagmata,
  • Uchan-su (Vodopadnaya),
  • Derekoika (Bystraya),
  • Avunda.

Facts about Uchan-su Waterfall:

  • water falls from about 100 m;
  • the sound of water can be heard from 1−2 km away;
  • in summer the waterfall dries up and divides into three tiny streams.
