SMALL PHYLLOPHORA FIELD
STATE NATURE REFUGE

SMALL PHYLLOPHORA FIELD STATE NATURE REFUGE
Small Phyllophora Field State Nature Refuge was founded with an aim to protect the colonies of Phyllophora algae.

Phyllophora is a genus of red algae that inhabits the floor of the Black Sea. Phyllophora is not only a beautiful plant but also a very valuable one since it is rich in iodine. It is also a source of agaroid, which is one of the most potent gel-forming substances of natural origin and is similar in composition to agar-agar.

The key species of the community is the pseudoparenchymatous red algae Phyllophora nervosa. In the last few years, the condition of the population has been relatively stable. Therefore the biocenosis has been almost completely preserved. The Small Phyllophora field was discovered in 1957.

The nature refuge belongs to the wetlands of international importance and certainly is of great scientific interest.
Small Phyllophora Field is the largest nature refuge in Crimea and its total area is 385 square kilometers.
