Crimean nature is amazing and multifaceted. There are endless sea expanses and inaccessible mountains, salt lakes and underground springs, flaming sunsets and tranquil transparent mornings. The air is saturated with aromas of lavender and thyme and rare species of animals inhabit the coast.

Our friends, photographers and staff members carefully capture life in the nature reserve in photos and videos. Little ground squirrel
It is one of the smallest ground squirrels. Its distinctive features are an earthy grey back, a whitish throat, a greyish belly and a short tail. Little ground squirrel inhabits forb-feather steppes, sagebrush semi-deserts and deserts. These rodents eat plants and whistle to communicate. Every individual has its own way of whistling.

That is how they distinguish each other after hibernation and their mates from strangers. A short loud whistle is a signal of danger and an approaching predator.

Little ground squirrel of Kazantyp and Opuksky nature reserves is included in the Red Data Book of Russia.
Very rare species
In Kazantyp Nature Reserve you can find both a rare plant called Tulipa biebersteiniana and the only poisonous snake in the Crimea called Vipera renardi. Most of the rare plants are endemic as well, which means you can’t find them anywhere else in the world. Some of the animal species of the nature reserve are endangered.
Plants, fungi and lichen: 1024 species.
Rare and endangered: 62 species.

Animals: 1278 species.
Rare and endangered: 169 species.
The largest animal groups are rodents (9 species), bats (8 species) and predators (4 species). That is why you are likely to meet a European hare and unlikely to see a least weasel.
The rich entomofauna of the nature reserve gives a rare opportunity to see unique insect species among lichen on the rocks.
